Groundbreaking Report on Chinatown
Restaurant Workers
by Saba
Waheed, DataCenter Research Director
The
Chinese
Progressive Association(CPA), with support from the
DataCenter,
released the groundbreaking report that documents the
working and health conditions of San Francisco Chinatown's
restaurant workers. This report, based on surveys of 433
restaurant workers interviewed by their peers and observational
data on 106 restaurants, found a prevalence of low-road
industry practices such as wage violations, lack of benefits,
poor working conditions, and stressful and hazardous workplaces.
These conditions leave workers insecure in their jobs
and vulnerable to injury and illness, while negatively
affecting consumers, businesses, and the community. The
problems in Chinatown reflect a national epidemic of wage
theft and lowered labor standards. The report concludes
with a series of recommendations to address working conditions
for restaurant workers as well as all low wage workers.

Documenting
Our Lives: A Step-By-Step Guide On Designing and Implementing
Your Own Research Project
We know that designing a research
project can be daunting. DataCenter's newest toolkit Documenting
Our Lives: A Guide To Designing Your Research Project
walks you through that planning process. It outlines things
to keep in mind during the planning such as capacity and
resource issues, strategic considerations, and how to
choose your methods. The guide includes a worksheet that
is clear and simple to use in building your plan. Based
on our popular workshop, this toolkit will support organizations
in that first and most important step in the research
process.

of California, Berkeley. She is part of the first generation
in her family to attend college and as such has been an
advocate for educational justice and access for socio-economically
disadvantaged peoples. At UC Berkeley she completed her

Area Domestic Workers and Organizing Methods.
My
Summer Internship: Researching the Food Chain
by Chris Moulton, University of California,
DataCenter Summer Intern As
a Research and Policy Intern for DataCenter, in collaboration
with the Food
Chain Workers Alliance (FCWA), I completed several
projects dealing with low-wage workers in the food supply-chain.
The purpose of this research is to assist the members
of the FCWA to gather information about workers in the
industries all along the food chain so that they can improve
conditions for all food-related workers. The industries
analyzed include: agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry,
meatpacking/poultry processing, food processing and manufacturing,
logistics (includes warehouses, transportation, food distribution),
grocery, and restaurants. The primary focus of these projects
addressed mobility of the workers within these industries,
whether there were opportunities for advancement, barriers
to advancement, differences between unionized and non-unionized
workplaces, and wage inequities.

On September 24th, DataCenter will
also present a workshop titled, Democratizing Research:
How To Use Participatory Research to Tap the Existing
Knowledge in your Community. Past responses to the
workshop have been overwhelming positive. Here's what
some of those participants have said about the workshop:
"All of the materials
will be incredibly valuable! Also the crockpot analogy
is super helpful! Having the tools to think through designing
a research project is what I needed!"
"Great discussions
and intriguing visuals. I liked how the whiteboard was
used throughout the conversation."
"It was a great workshop
~ the most valuable for me was the elements of research
and the starting your research project checklist."
"[The workshop had]
a lot of structure on how to gather, process, and deliver
the message - tailored to a specific audience."
"Case studies were
really helpful/concrete. Also the crockpot analogy was
a great way to think about tools/methods."

Spotlight
with Summer Intern Andrew Mayersohn
"I
enjoyed putting some of my econometric skills to
use analyzing the Sustaining Organizing Survey dataset."
"I got a lot more
familiar with SPSS working on the Sustaining Organizing
Survey. I discovered many useful databases and resources
for researching donors, corporations, politicians,
etc.
I got better at organizing, summarizing, and distilling
research."
