From the DataCenter's Criminal Justice Program, Spring/Summer 2002:

Know Your Rights

Since September 11, Homies Unidos, a non-profit gang violence prevention and intervention organization based in San Salvador, El Salvador, and Los Angeles, California, has been conducting "Know Your Rights" workshops with youth in immigrant communities in Southern California. The workshops are designed to keep youth informed about the continuing crackdown on their rights, and to help plan strategies for fighting back.

To develop the workshops, Homies Unidos asked the DataCenter to gather information on immigrant incarceration before and after September 11. Homies Unidos then used our research to create workshop content and materials.

In addition to providing statistics documenting immigrant incarceration rates, we created a "Know Your Rights" factsheet that explains the laws, executive orders and regulations that have stripped basic rights from immigrants since September 11. The factsheet summarizes key provisions of the so-called "Patriot Act," parameters of Presidential order on military tribunals, and guidelines for using secret evidence against immigrants.
