Renowned activist-poet Audre Lorde had it right when she said,

In our world, divide and conquer must become define and empower.

Stories, Culture, & Social Change

nonprofit day 2010August 31, 2010 – Opening Remarks to CompassPoint Nonprofit Day
By Miho Kim, Executive Director, DataCenter

When I first learned about storytelling being the theme for this year’s Non Profit Day, I was excited.  And then, this question crossed my mind.  “Will I be expected to share my own story in front of all these people I don’t even know, in a professional setting, at a conference, of all places?!”  And then I didn’t like the theme so much any more.

I tell my stories all the time.   In fact, I consider myself pretty proficient in telling stories and in listening, and being the holder of stories shared by elders and others. But, that’s not something I don’t do much in my professional capacity or in professional spaces.  I was intentionally not bringing that powerful tool called storytelling actively into my professional spaces.

New Updates!

By Miho Kim

DataCenter is pleased to announce the release of our new publication, Research Justice in a New Era: DataCenter’s 5-year strategic priorities for 2010-2014 (pdf)! This strategic planning process came at a time of major transitions in our society and our world, and also a time of transition for DataCenter, as Co-founder Fred Goff retires after more than 30 years of leadership and service to the organization and the social justice movement (see our blog on Founder Transition here).

We updated the Mission Statement, our tagline, and our “look” – and above all, we are particularly excited to share with you our graphic rendition of our vision and strategy for helping communities build legitimacy behind their voice through use of strategic research — after all, people who have first-hand experiences have the expertise to craft solutions that last! We look forward to your feedback.

This article first appeared in Leadership Learning Community’s Blog about the GEO 2010 National Conference: Insights into Collective Leadership.

When it comes to the topic of Shared Leadership, DataCenter has typically responded to small- to mid-size non-profit organizations eager to learn about our experiences while trying to promote a sustainable organizational culture of collaboration over competition, dialog over debate, and power-with over power-over.  In most cases, callers had observed a fair amount of unhealthy, challenging power dynamics play out in the organization, and feel the urgency to ‘really do something about it this time.’

In the case of DataCenter, it took literally the hemorrhaging of our organizational leadership, from the Co-Directors up through the Board of Directors in its entirety, to incentivize a rather radical structural shift to a Shared Leadership Model.  This organizational ‘rupturing’ in a way cracked open the space to take what was always a highly regarded “value” at the DataCenter into an actual “structure.”

Shared Leadership Case Study: DataCenter

excerpt taken from Bella Celnik’s Blog

In October 2009, at a Leadership Learning Community (LLC) Bay Area Circle, Miho Kim and Celia Davis of the DataCenter shared their learning about the “Shared Leadership” model adopted by the Center in 2006.  The two hour meeting was very well-attended, raising many questions, which as a result of the time constraints went unanswered.  The high level of interest and participation in the topic appears to reflect the degree to which many in the nonprofit sector are beginning to explore different models and ways of working together.  Miho Kim generously agreed to a follow up conversation with me to flesh out some of the questions raised at the convening (this piece is a synthesis of our interview and the Bay Area circle convening).  Read the entire article here.

Annual Report 2009

In 2009, DataCenter partnered with 47 organizations and community groups and provided nearly 100 different services, including in-depth participatory research projects, tactical and strategic research, consultations, capacity building trainings and campaign strategy. Twenty of those partnerships generated earned income, covering a quarter of our budget. We also provided quick one-time support and referral services to an additional 50 organizations.

Annual Report 2007

For thirty years, DataCenter has delivered information to people working for justice. We owe our longevity and growth to the support of our donors, funders and community partners, and to the leadership and commitment of staff and board.

In 2007, DataCenter partnered with grassroots social justice organizations across the country and internationally to fight predatory transnational corporations, demand human rights and dignity on the job, develop sustainable energy, hold the public education system accountable and address disproportionate incarceration in communities of color.
